Since introducing the Magic Table into daily life at Harbour Rise, it’s the quiet, meaningful moments that have stood out most.
Seaside soundscapes have prompted conversations about childhood holidays in Devon and Cornwall. One resident described the gentle waves as “very relaxing,” as memories of family trips resurfaced.
Soft butterfly projections brought a smile to another lady’s face as she recalled how her son used to call them “catch you fly’s.” She carefully reached out to touch the moving light, fully engaged in the moment.
Another resident explored interactive quizzes and seaside scenes, describing the experience as:
“Amazing… very therapeutic. I’m amazed at what technology can do.”
These are not grand gestures. They are simple, human moments of connection – and they matter enormously.
Supporting Wellbeing in Gentle, Practical Ways

After several sessions using the sensory system, something quietly significant happened. Residents who often need encouragement were able to drink a full glass of water independently.
It may seem small. But hydration is vital, and achieving it through relaxation and positive engagement – rather than prompting alone – reflects the power of thoughtful, person-centred approaches.

The Magic Table was made possible thanks to months of fundraising beginning in April 2025.
Our summer garden party, Christmas fayre and quiz night were generously supported by local families and businesses, alongside donations from Paignton Lions Club, Little Ant Insurance and Roundham Garage.
We were recently delighted to welcome members of Paignton Lions Club to see the system in action – a wonderful full-circle moment that reflects Harbour Rise’s strong community connections.

We are still learning – discovering which visuals spark conversation, which sounds bring calm, and how different people respond to movement and interaction.
