At Harbour Rise, we are always exploring thoughtful ways to enhance wellbeing for the people who live with us. As an Outstanding-rated care home in Paignton, we believe that meaningful experiences, calm surroundings and personal connection are just as important as high-quality clinical care.
That’s why, after careful consideration and several demonstrations, we introduced a new OM Interactive sensory “Magic Table” system – designed to support people living with dementia in a gentle, inclusive and person-centred way.
And already, it’s making a difference.
Choosing Dementia-Friendly Technology That Truly Supports Individuals
When we began looking at dementia-friendly technology, it was important that anything we chose could be used flexibly.
We wanted a system that wasn’t limited to communal areas. Many residents feel most comfortable in their own rooms, and some are cared for in bed. The ability to bring experiences directly to someone – rather than expecting them to come to an activity – was essential.
The OM Interactive sensory system allows us to do exactly that.
It can be used:
- One-to-one in a resident’s room
- Gently projected onto a bed or table surface
- In small group settings
- For quiet sensory stimulation or light, engaging activities
This flexibility ensures it never becomes a “one-size-fits-all” activity. Instead, it supports truly personalised care – something we prioritise in our residential, respite and day care services here in Torbay.

The Magic Table was made possible thanks to months of fundraising beginning in April 2025.
Our summer garden party, Christmas fayre and quiz night were generously supported by local families and businesses, alongside donations from Paignton Lions Club, Little Ant Insurance and Roundham Garage.
We were recently delighted to welcome members of Paignton Lions Club to see the system in action – a wonderful full-circle moment that reflects Harbour Rise’s strong community connections.

A Natural Part of Daily Life
We are still learning – discovering which visuals spark conversation, which sounds bring calm, and how different people respond to movement and interaction.
Over time, we expect the Magic Table to become a natural part of everyday life at Harbour Rise. Sometimes it will support reminiscence. Other times, gentle physical movement. Sometimes quizzes and shared laughter. Sometimes quiet, soothing moments.
What guides us most are the reactions, preferences and stories of the people who use it.
Because meaningful care is never prescriptive – it is shaped by the individual.
